    Yeah that's really good. I have a gig double G, much higher in practice room. I have the same range on anything, but the key is efficiency. A "lead" mouthpiece just makes the job easier.

    Ive just ordered the Denis Wick SMUltra 4XR mouthpiece.I am mainly a trombone player and always used a Vincent Bach 4G for most of my playing career.I did use a Denis Wick 4AL when I was on euphonium in the Grenadier Guards band in the late 70's and early 80's.When i went back on trombone I was playing in the Grens Dance band so went on to a Bach 5G .Now I am 68 and in my retirement years I am back on a 4G rim size but using Doug Elliotts XT 102 rims ,im very happy on them as they are very comfortable.I cant get on with the Wick flat rims ,but now you have redesigned the Ultra 4X euphonium mouthpiece to a more rounded rim and slightly less deeper cup ,I am really looking forward to using it on both my large bore tenor trombones and Sovereign 967 euph .To me sounds like a complete circle of the original trombone designed Wick 4AL which was also at the time used by the very best Euphonium players of the day like Lyndon Baglin,the childs brothers and just about everyone else ,and a new and improved design euphonium mouthpiece which I think will be also a great choice for the symphonic and brass band player. I am really excited to receive my SM Ultra 4XR and put it to test .I will let you know how i get on with it?

    My review from what I hear: Classic: Had the clearest articulation, a balanced body of sound, overall consistent mouthpiece Heritage: Had the most “solid and efficient” sound, very dark sound but ended up losing some articulation clarity due to sheer sound output AT: Seemed to sound lighter and brighter than other mouthpieces, articulation was good, especially the staccato. Had the most even timbre. I’ve only played on an AT mouthpiece and with my experience, it generated a LOT of dark sound, but if I had to choose, either the Classic or the AT mouthpiece!

    Hi, I'm considering purchasing a mouthpiece for my new Medium shank Euph, but I'm stuck on choosing which one. I currently play on a 51D mouthpiece, so I am used to a deeper cup. My strength in the high range is my biggest weakness, so I feel as though the SM5U will be the best choice for me. It isn't too big, and shouldn't be much deeper than the 51D. And maybe in a year or two, upgrade to the SM4U. Any thoughts?

    hi,,i just learned about this illness today and i believe this is what caused me to go from a pro clarinetist to a music teacher..i noticed over the course of several years, starting when i was in my thirties, that my embouchure endurance was getting worse to the point that i could only play a few minutes before my chops would just give out. i had to stop playing an now,,30 years later i want to try again,,over the past several days i have been re starting, but very gradually but i feel that my embouchure is still very weak...i need help..

    I think that this is the right channel to ask this, as my username states, I play euphonium (and trombone) I am curios tho, would a trombone 4.5 al heritage work on a large bore eupho? I have a large bore trombone and they have the same shank size

    • @DenisWickUSA
      @DenisWickUSA 5 місяців тому

      Yes, a large shank trombone mouthpiece will work, and many use them for euphonium, however you might find more performance efficiency in using a mouthpiece specifically designed for a euphonium (the Denis Wick Steven Mead series for Euphonium is widely used around the world).

    I don’t think it’s about a shallow mouthpiece giving you extra range. It won’t give you more range than you already have. It will just give you it for longer before you’re worn out. It’s about finding that balance between there being so much resistance from the mouthpiece that you’re fighting against the horn and working too hard, or so little that you’re having trouble providing enough air to keep the stream going and it feels like you’re being sucked into the horn and you’re working too hard. You want a mouthpiece that runs on that line between those two extremes, where you have a nice, relaxed, easy and efficient blow; not so easy, that you’re getting sucked in, and not so difficult that you’re fighting to get the notes out. That balance will be different for everybody and may also be dependent on the type of music you predominantly play. I think first, you find the rim diameter that works for you, something that is comfortable for you in all playing situations, and then find the cup depth that gives you that balance you need to be right on the line between too much and too little resistance. Then, if you need to adjust your cup depth for the kind of music you’re playing, you can go shallower or deeper as needed, but the one constant is you have the security of always playing on the same rim. So, using the Bach numbering system as an example, let’s say you play on a Bach #3 rim. You might use a 3C for concert or “legit” playing, and a 3E for lead playing. You might also just play on one or the other all the time if it’s giving you that consistent balance between too much and too little resistance, if you’re satisfied with your sound in various musical situations. The only way to find out is to experiment. Once you find the right rim diameter, however, I think that should remain the constant, and do your experimenting with the cup depth.

    Could you use this mute with a bugle? Also would this type of mute be helpful for practicing in a household to mute the sound more so it's less disturbing? Thanks!

    • @DenisWickUSA
      @DenisWickUSA 6 місяців тому

      It would depend on the size of the bugle bell. These are specifically designed for Bb/C trumpet and cornet. If you are looking for a mute for quiet practice, the Denis Wick Practice mute will help you most. Some people also use their aluminum Denis Wick Adjustable cup for this effect. By shifting the cup all the way to the bell so it sits flush with the bell, you can drastically dampen the sound, however from a tuning and performance perspective, the practice mute will serve your purposes much better.
